Heating a ferrous alloy to a temperature (varies with grade) that produces Austinite.
Quench and Temper
Austenitizing followed by cooling (quenching) at a rate that produces the desired mechanical properties and ensures the integrity of the part after tempering to desired hardness. Quench media and methods vary and may be unique to a particular application. A brief list of quench media includes: still air, forced air, water, oil, polymer, or even molten salt or lead.
