Atmospheric Heat Treating
This refers to a specialized type of furnace used to preserve the surface (at the microscopic level) of metallic materials during heating cycles (see Intergranular Attack). The working chamber and working zone of the furnace is continually purged of atmospheric air with gases that ensure a neutral surface condition, no oxidation, and no carburization.
