Carburizing
Case Hardening
A surface hardening heat treatment applied to medium to low carbon alloy and plain steels. An atmosphere furnace is used and the gas supply in the heating zone is adjusted to produce a carbon rich environment for heating of the parts. In a reaction opposite that of oxidation, the steel absorbs carbon into its surface and when quenched this high carbon surface hardens to a much higher hardness and greater wear properties than the material itself can achieve. It is possible to selectively carburize via special coatings and mechanical devices that prevent the carbon rich gases from encountering the material surface during heating.
